Why Is My Dog Scratching So Much? (Causes and Solutions)

A dog that scratches constantly is miserable — and usually the scratching is the symptom of something fixable. Here's the complete guide to dog scratching causes, from the common to the medical, and what to do about each one.

Most Common Causes of Excessive Scratching

1. Fleas

The most common cause of sudden, intense scratching — especially at the base of the tail, back, and belly. Flea allergic dermatitis (FAD) means dogs react severely to even a single flea bite. You don't need to see fleas to have a flea problem — look for flea dirt (tiny black specks that turn red when wet) in the coat.

2. Environmental Allergies (Atopy)

Pollen, mold, dust mites, and grass all cause seasonal or year-round itching in allergic dogs. The face, paws, ears, and belly are most commonly affected. Seasonal patterns are a strong indicator.

3. Food Allergies

Year-round itching without seasonal variation, often accompanied by ear infections and gastrointestinal issues. Common culprits: beef, chicken, wheat, dairy, egg.

4. Dry Skin

Common in winter or in dry climates like Arizona. Visible flaking and dull coat alongside scratching. Diet supplementation with omega-3 fatty acids (fish oil) is effective.

5. Mange

Sarcoptic mange (scabies) causes intense itching, hair loss, and skin crusting. Highly contagious to other dogs and temporarily to humans. Requires veterinary treatment.

6. Contact Dermatitis

Reaction to something touching the skin — new bedding, cleaning products, lawn chemicals. Pattern of scratching in areas that contact the floor or bedding is suggestive.

When to See a Vet

If scratching causes skin damage (raw areas, hair loss, open sores), is accompanied by other symptoms, or doesn't improve when fleas are ruled out — see a vet. Skin conditions are significantly easier and cheaper to treat early than after they progress.
