The question every dog parent searches every summer: what time should I walk my dog when it's hot? The answer depends on your specific climate and conditions, but the principles are consistent and the math isn't complicated.
The Pavement Temperature Rule
Pavement surface temperature is the primary factor in walk safety — more important than air temperature. Air temperature tells you how hot your dog will get during the walk. Pavement temperature tells you whether their paws will be injured during it.
Pavement begins absorbing solar heat from sunrise and reaches peak temperature 2-3 hours after the air temperature peaks — typically between 2pm and 5pm depending on your location. It releases heat slowly, meaning early evening walks can still involve dangerously hot pavement even when the air has cooled somewhat.
Summer Walk Windows by Temperature
Air temp under 70°F: Any time is generally safe. Apply normal judgment about pavement temperature.
Air temp 70-80°F: Before 9am or after 6pm strongly preferred. Avoid midday entirely for flat-faced breeds.
Air temp 80-90°F: Before 8am or after 7pm. Keep walks short. Carry water. Do the pavement test before every walk.
Air temp above 90°F: Before 7am or after 8pm only. Keep to under 20 minutes. Carry a water bottle and offer water every 10 minutes. For flat-faced breeds, consider skipping the walk and providing indoor enrichment instead.
The Indoor Alternative
On days that are genuinely too hot for safe walking, indoor enrichment replaces the walk. A snuffle mat session, a frozen lick mat, a training session, and free play in an air-conditioned space gives your dog mental and physical stimulation without the heat risk. Your dog will not suffer from missing one walk on a dangerously hot day. They will suffer from heatstroke.
After the Walk
Body temperature stays elevated for 20-30 minutes after a walk ends. A cooling mat immediately after returning gives your dog a passive cooling surface during this window — when they're still warm from the walk but the walk itself is over.
