Boxers are essentially large, athletic puppies who forget they've grown up. They bounce. They wiggle their entire rear end in greeting. They lean against you with their full body weight as a love gesture. They play with a reckless enthusiasm that makes you laugh and occasionally knocks you over. They're one of the most expressive, energetic, and rewarding breeds to live with β and they need an owner who can match their energy.
Exercise Requirements
Significant β 60 to 90 minutes of vigorous exercise daily for an adult Boxer. They're athletic dogs with endurance and love running, fetch, and roughhousing. A silicone frisbee is an excellent Boxer toy β they can run and jump for it with the full-body commitment this breed brings to everything.
Heat Sensitivity
Boxers are brachycephalic β moderately flat-faced compared to Pugs and Bulldogs, but still at higher risk of heat-related illness than long-nosed breeds. Summer walks must be timed carefully. Always use a water bottle. A cooling mat after exercise gives them a passive recovery surface.
Training
Boxers are intelligent and trainable but have the attention span their energy level implies β keep sessions short, varied, and high-energy. They respond well to positive reinforcement. A well-trained Boxer is one of the greatest dogs imaginable. An untrained one is creative chaos.
Health
Heart conditions β particularly dilated cardiomyopathy and arrhythmias β are unfortunately common in Boxers. Cancer rates are also higher than average. Regular cardiac screening and annual vet checks from middle age are recommended. Life expectancy 10-12 years.
