The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel consistently ranks among the most beloved companion dogs in the world — and for good reason. They're gentle, adaptable, affectionate without being overwhelming, and genuinely happy in almost any living situation as long as their person is nearby. They're also a breed with significant health concerns that every potential owner must understand.
Personality
Cavaliers are the definition of companion dogs. They were bred for one purpose — to be with people — and they fulfill it completely. They're good with children, elderly people, other dogs, and cats. They're calm enough for apartment living and athletic enough to enjoy hikes. They adapt to your lifestyle rather than demanding you adapt to theirs.
Exercise Needs
Moderate — 30-45 minutes daily. They enjoy walks and gentle play but don't require the sustained vigorous exercise of working breeds. Mental enrichment matters as much as physical — a snuffle mat and a lick mat for enrichment sessions keep them mentally satisfied.
The Heart Issue Every Owner Must Know
Mitral valve disease affects the majority of Cavaliers by age 10 — and a significant percentage much earlier. It's a progressive condition that eventually leads to heart failure. Responsible breeders health test breeding stock, but the genetic prevalence is high enough that all Cavalier owners should have annual cardiac screening from age 5. This isn't fearmongering — it's preparation that can meaningfully extend your dog's life through early detection and treatment.
Syringomyelia
A neurological condition unique to the breed caused by the skull being too small for the brain. Signs include scratching at the neck or shoulder area, sensitivity to touch around the head and neck, and apparent pain without obvious cause. Affects a significant percentage of Cavaliers. Health-tested breeding reduces risk but doesn't eliminate it.
Grooming
The silky coat needs brushing 2-3 times weekly and professional grooming every 8-10 weeks. Ears need regular checking and cleaning — the long, floppy ear flap traps moisture and warmth, creating ideal conditions for infection.
