Chihuahua Owner Guide: Big Personality in a Tiny Package

Chihuahuas are the smallest recognized dog breed in the world and possibly the least aware of this fact. They approach Great Danes, challenge Rottweilers, and demand respect from everyone in the household with a confidence that borders on delusional and is completely endearing. They're also loyal to a fault, highly intelligent, and β€” under the bluster β€” often anxious dogs who need careful management.

The Small Dog Syndrome Problem

Many behavioral problems attributed to Chihuahuas are actually the result of inconsistent training β€” owners who laugh at behaviors they'd never tolerate in a large dog. A Chihuahua who bites is dangerous to children and other animals even if the damage is less catastrophic than a large breed bite. Train your Chihuahua to the same standard you'd train any dog. They're capable of it.

Cold Sensitivity

Chihuahuas have minimal body fat and a single short coat in many cases. They genuinely feel cold in temperatures that barely register for other breeds. A warm blanket in their sleeping area and a self-warming donut bed are practical necessities, not indulgences.

Exercise and Mental Needs

Despite their size, Chihuahuas need 20-30 minutes of daily exercise and regular mental stimulation. A snuffle mat sized appropriately provides excellent mental enrichment for this highly intelligent breed.

Collar Choice

Chihuahuas are prone to tracheal collapse β€” never use a collar for walking. Always use a properly fitted lightweight harness. The collar stays on for ID only.

Health

Generally long-lived β€” 14-17 years is common. Heart disease, patellar luxation, dental disease (small mouths, crowded teeth), and hydrocephalus in some bloodlines are the primary health concerns.
