Dog Harness Chafing: How to Prevent It and Fix It

Harness rub is one of the most common complaints from dog owners — and one of the most preventable. A harness that causes chafing won't be worn, which means no pulling control and no safety benefits. Here's everything you need to know about preventing and treating harness chafing.

Where Harnesses Chafe Most

  • Armpits (axillae) — the most common location; straps that run through the armpit area rub with every step
  • Chest — under the chest plate on dogs with deep or narrow chests
  • Neck — neck loop edges on dogs with short, thick necks
  • Girth strap area — behind the front legs if the strap sits too far forward

Why Chafing Happens

The most common causes are wrong fit (straps too tight or positioned incorrectly), inadequate padding, non-breathable material that traps heat and moisture, and dirty or wet harnesses worn for extended periods.

Prevention: The Right Fit

Most chafing is a fit problem. Check these points:

  • The girth strap should sit well behind the elbows — at least one inch of clearance
  • Armpit straps should not run directly through the armpit — they should pass in front of or behind it
  • The two-finger rule on all straps — snug but not compressing
  • Recheck fit weekly for growing puppies

Prevention: The Right Harness

A well-padded chest plate distributes contact across a broad area rather than concentrating it. Breathable materials prevent heat buildup. Smooth edges rather than stitched ridges reduce friction.

The Big Paw Baby's No-Pull Harness features a padded chest plate, smooth strap edges, and a girth strap designed to clear the armpit area. Most dogs wear it for extended periods without any chafing issues when properly fitted.

Treating Existing Chafing

Give the affected area time to heal before reintroducing the harness. Apply a thin layer of pet-safe skin balm to soothe the irritation. When reintroducing, check and adjust the fit carefully — the old fit caused the problem. Consider a different harness style if the same spot keeps recurring.
