Dog Harness vs Collar: Which Is Better?

The Case Against Collars for Walking
Collars concentrate all leash pressure on a small area of the neck. For a dog that walks calmly, this isn't a problem. For a dog that pulls, lunges, or reacts, repeated collar pressure can cause:
- Tracheal injury — especially in small breeds and brachycephalic (flat-faced) breeds
- Cervical spine damage from sudden jerks
- Thyroid gland damage from chronic pressure
- Increased intraocular pressure (relevant for dogs with or at risk of glaucoma)
- Nerve damage to the front legs in severe cases
A 2006 study in the Journal of the American Animal Hospital Association found that dogs walked on collars had significantly higher intraocular pressure than those walked on harnesses.
