Your dog sleeps 12 hours and you wonder if something is wrong. Nothing is wrong. Dogs are polyphasic sleepers with very different sleep requirements from humans — and sleep quality directly affects their behavior, health, and emotional regulation in ways that most owners don't realize.
How Much Sleep Is Normal
Adult dogs: 12-14 hours per day, distributed across multiple sleep periods rather than one consolidated block. Puppies and senior dogs: up to 18-20 hours. Large breeds tend to sleep more than small breeds. Working breeds may sleep less when adequately stimulated.
What looks like excessive sleeping to a human is normal canine rest. Dogs have evolved to conserve energy between activity bursts — a pattern inherited from ancestors who expended significant energy hunting and then needed full recovery.
REM Sleep and Dreaming
Dogs experience REM sleep — the stage associated with dreaming in humans. The twitching, leg running, soft barking, and eye movement you see during your dog's sleep are signs of active dreaming. What are they dreaming about? Research suggests they replay experiences from the day — the walk, the play session, the interactions. Don't wake a dreaming dog unnecessarily.
Sleep Quality Matters
The surface your dog sleeps on affects sleep quality. A dog sleeping on a hard floor doesn't get the same recovery as one on a supportive surface. For senior dogs especially, joint pain on hard surfaces significantly disrupts sleep quality — producing a dog who sleeps more hours but wakes less rested. A calming donut bed with supportive filling improves both sleep quality and duration for dogs who previously slept on inadequate surfaces.
Behavioral Signs of Sleep Deprivation
Under-rested dogs show increased reactivity, shorter fuse on frustration tolerance, difficulty focusing during training, and more impulsive behavior. If your dog's behavior has deteriorated without obvious cause, sleep quality is worth evaluating alongside exercise and enrichment.
