How to Measure Your Dog for a Harness (Get It Right First Time)
The single most common reason harnesses don't work or get returned is wrong sizing. A harness that's too big allows escape and causes chafing. One that's too small restricts movement and causes discomfort. Here's exactly how to measure to get it right the first time.
The Two Measurements That Matter
1. Chest Girth (Most Important)
This is the measurement that determines harness size. Wrap a soft tape measure around the widest part of your dog's chest β this is just behind the front legs, around the rib cage. Keep the tape snug but not compressing the fur. Note the measurement in inches or centimeters.
2. Neck Circumference
Measure around the base of the neck, where a collar would normally sit. This is needed for harnesses with a neck loop. Add 2 inches to this measurement for comfortable fit.
Tips for Accurate Measuring
- Have your dog stand β measurements taken lying down or sitting are inaccurate
- Measure twice β soft tape measures can shift; take two readings and average them
- Measure over the coat, not skin-level β the harness will sit on the coat
- Add the manufacturer's recommended ease β usually 1-2 inches for medium-large dogs
When You're Between Sizes
Always size up. A harness that's slightly large can be adjusted tighter. A harness that's slightly small cannot be made larger and will cause discomfort or restrict movement.
Body Shape Considerations
Some breeds have unusual proportions that complicate standard sizing:
- Barrel-chested breeds (French Bulldogs, English Bulldogs) β chest girth is much larger than weight suggests; always measure
- Deep-chested breeds (Greyhounds, Dobermans, Great Danes) β deep from top to bottom; look for depth adjustment or Y-front harnesses
- Thick-coated breeds (Huskies, Malamutes) β add 1-2 inches for coat compression
The Big Paw Baby's No-Pull Harness size chart is based on chest girth measurement with 2-inch ease built in. Use the size chart with your chest girth measurement for the most accurate fit.
