How to Put On a No-Pull Dog Harness: Step-by-Step Guide

A no-pull harness only works if it fits correctly. Too loose and it slips, chafes, or lets your dog escape. Too tight and it restricts movement and causes discomfort. Here's exactly how to fit and put on a front-clip no-pull harness properly.

What You'll Need

  • Your no-pull harness
  • A soft measuring tape
  • Treats for making it a positive experience

Step 1: Measure Your Dog

Measure the widest part of your dog's chest, just behind the front legs. Also measure the neck at its base (where a collar would sit). Use the harness size chart β€” when in between sizes, go up for more comfort and adjustability.

Step 2: Loosen All Straps

Before putting the harness on, loosen all adjustment straps completely. This makes it much easier to slip on and ensures you're fitting to your dog rather than wrestling them into a preset shape.

Step 3: Slip Over the Head

Hold the harness open and let your dog sniff it first. Slide the neck loop over their head so the chest plate sits on the front of their chest, not on the throat. The D-ring for the front clip should be centered on the breastbone.

Step 4: Thread the Legs

Guide each front leg through the appropriate opening. The straps should sit behind the armpits β€” not in them. Harness rub in the armpit area is the most common fit problem and causes sores over time.

Step 5: Fasten and Adjust

Clip all buckles and tighten straps gradually β€” snug but not tight. The two-finger rule: you should be able to slide two fingers under any strap. One finger means too tight. Three fingers means too loose and escape is possible.

Step 6: Check the Front Clip Position

The front D-ring should sit centered on the sternum, not off to one side. If it's consistently pulling to one side, adjust the shoulder straps until it centers.

The Freedom Check

Ask your dog to sit, lie down, and walk a few steps. Watch for any restriction in the front leg movement β€” the harness should move with them, not against them. A properly fitted harness is essentially invisible to a comfortable dog.
