How to Wash a Dog Harness (And How Often)
Your dog's harness absorbs sweat, mud, rain, dog odor, and everything they roll in on every walk. Most owners never wash their harness — which is a hygiene problem and a longevity problem. Here's how to clean it properly without damaging the hardware or webbing.
How Often to Wash
- Light use in dry weather — monthly washing is fine
- Active use, sweaty dogs, or muddy walks — every 2 weeks
- After swimming, beach trips, or heavy mud — wash immediately
- Dogs with skin conditions — weekly washing removes bacteria and allergens that can exacerbate skin problems
Method 1: Hand Washing (Recommended)
- Fill a basin with warm (not hot) water and a small amount of dog-safe shampoo or mild detergent
- Submerge the harness and agitate gently
- Pay particular attention to the chest plate, armpit areas, and any areas with visible dirt or odor
- Rinse thoroughly until no soap remains — residual soap causes skin irritation
- Gently squeeze excess water — don't wring or twist
- Air dry flat or hang — never machine dry
Method 2: Machine Washing
Place the harness in a mesh laundry bag to prevent the buckles from damaging your machine. Use cold water, gentle cycle, mild detergent. No fabric softener — it degrades webbing over time. Air dry only — dryer heat warps buckles and weakens webbing.

- Hot water — weakens webbing fibers and can warp plastic buckles
- Bleach — degrades nylon webbing and metal hardware
- Dryer heat — warps buckles, shrinks webbing
- Harsh chemicals — can leave residues that irritate skin
Post-Wash Hardware Check
After washing, check all buckles for cracks or deformation, D-rings for any bending, and stitching for any loosening. Washing is an ideal time to inspect your harness for wear that could compromise safety.
