The Miniature Schnauzer manages to be simultaneously one of the lowest-shedding breeds and one of the most high-maintenance in terms of coat care. They're spirited, alert, highly trainable, and remarkably adaptable — at home in city apartments and country houses with equal success. They have opinions. They voice them. They're wonderful.
Temperament
Bold, curious, and confident. Schnauzers were originally ratters — they have the terrier spirit without being classified as terriers. They're more trainable than most terrier types but have the same independent thinking and vocal tendencies. They bond strongly with their family and are generally good with children and other dogs they've been raised with.
Exercise
Moderate — 30-45 minutes of daily exercise is sufficient. They're energetic but not demanding in the way working breeds are. Mental stimulation matters as much as physical activity — a snuffle mat and regular training sessions keep their quick minds engaged.
The Coat
The iconic double coat — wiry outer, soft undercoat — doesn't shed much but requires specific maintenance. Hand stripping preserves the coat texture correctly; clipping is easier but softens the coat over time. Professional grooming every 6-8 weeks is realistic for most owners. The beard and leg furnishings collect food and debris — check and clean regularly. A grooming glove for between-session maintenance helps.
Health
Generally healthy with good longevity — 12-15 years. Pancreatitis (high-fat diets are a risk factor), bladder stones, and eye conditions are the primary breed-specific concerns. Measure meals carefully and avoid fatty treats.
