Poodles have a reputation problem — the continental clip and the dog show circuit make them look like high-maintenance status symbols. The reality is a working dog of extraordinary intelligence, athleticism, and adaptability that comes in three sizes to suit almost any living situation.
Intelligence and Mental Needs
Poodles are routinely ranked in the top two or three most intelligent dog breeds. This is wonderful for training and terrible for under-stimulation. A bored Poodle is an inventive Poodle — and their inventiveness usually involves your belongings. Mental enrichment is non-negotiable: snuffle mats, treat balls, training sessions, and puzzle feeders should be daily features of Poodle ownership.
Exercise by Size
Standard Poodles need 60+ minutes of vigorous exercise daily — they're athletic dogs that excel at agility, swimming, and retrieving. Miniatures need 30-45 minutes. Toys need 20-30 minutes but still need mental work regardless of size.
Grooming Reality
Poodles don't shed significantly but their continuously growing coat requires professional grooming every 6-8 weeks. Between appointments, grooming gloves help with maintenance and bonding. Budget for grooming costs when considering a Poodle — it's a real ongoing expense.
Health
Generally healthy with good longevity — Standard Poodles live 12-15 years, Toys often 14-18. Hip dysplasia in Standards, progressive retinal atrophy across all sizes, and bloat risk in Standards are the primary health concerns.
