Puppy Starter Kit: Everything You Need in the First 30 Days

Everyone told you getting a puppy would be chaotic. They were right. The first few weeks involve sleep deprivation, accidents, and a creature who simultaneously melts your heart and destroys your belongings. The right gear doesn't eliminate the chaos — but it makes it significantly more manageable.

The Non-Negotiables

Some things you genuinely need from day one:

  • A harness — not a collar for walking. Puppies' tracheas are fragile. A harness distributes pressure across the chest where it belongs. Start them young and they'll accept it as normal.
  • A leash — shorter is better for training. 1.5 meters gives you control without giving them too much freedom on walks.
  • A collar with ID — even if you walk on a harness, always have a collar with your phone number. Puppies escape. It happens.
  • A lick mat — the single most useful calming tool for the first weeks. Vet visits, bath time, nail trims — the lick mat keeps them still and calm.
  • A soft plush toy — something they can sleep near. A toy from the breeder that smells like their litter is ideal for the first nights.
  • Poop bags — obviously. More than you think you need.

What You Can Wait On

Expensive dog beds — puppies chew them. Fancy feeding bowls — they don't care. Elaborate training equipment — keep it simple in the first month. Your puppy is learning that the world is safe and you're trustworthy. That doesn't require equipment.

The Most Important Investment

Your time. No product replaces the first month of bonding, consistent routine, and gentle introduction to the world. Everything else is support.
