The transition from adult to senior happens gradually and then all at once. You notice the grey around the muzzle. The stairs are slower. They sleep more. The fetch sessions are shorter. Your dog is aging — and how you respond to that changes everything about the quality of their remaining years.
When Is a Dog 'Senior'?
The common rule — one human year equals seven dog years — is an oversimplification. Larger breeds age faster than smaller breeds. A Great Dane is geriatric at 7. A Chihuahua is middle-aged. Generally: large breeds are senior from 6-7 years, medium breeds from 8-9, small breeds from 10-11.
The Physical Changes to Expect
Joint stiffness and arthritis are nearly universal in senior dogs — especially in hips, elbows, and spine. Signs include slower rising after rest, reluctance to jump, changed gait, and reduced enthusiasm for previously loved activities. Hard surfaces become less comfortable — a calming donut bed with orthopedic support makes a meaningful difference to a dog with joint pain.
Sensory decline — reduced hearing and vision — happens gradually. Dogs adapt remarkably well but benefit from consistent environments, gentle warnings before touching them from behind, and maintained routines that reduce surprise.
Cognitive decline — the dog equivalent of dementia — affects a significant percentage of dogs over 11. Signs include confusion, changed sleep patterns, reduced recognition, house training regression.
Adapting Care for a Senior Dog
Shorter, more frequent walks rather than long strenuous ones. A warm fleece blanket — senior dogs feel cold more acutely. Continued mental enrichment — a snuffle mat provides stimulation without physical strain. More frequent vet checks — twice yearly rather than annually from age 7+. Ramps instead of stairs where possible. More patience, always.
The Most Important Thing
Presence. Senior dogs need your company more than they need anything you can buy. Be there. Let them follow you around. Sit on the floor with them. The time is finite — spend it well.
