Shih Tzu Owner Guide: The Original Lap Dog With a Lion's Heart

The Shih Tzu was bred specifically to live in Chinese imperial palaces and be carried around by royalty. They have not forgotten this history and would like you to respect it. They're charming, affectionate, surprisingly sturdy for their size, and possess a dignity that makes it difficult to feel entirely in charge of your own home.

Exercise Needs

Low to moderate β€” 20-30 minutes of gentle daily walking is sufficient. They're not built for distance running or sustained vigorous activity. Mental stimulation matters as much as physical exercise β€” a snuffle mat provides excellent enrichment for this intelligent breed.

Heat Sensitivity

Shih Tzus are moderately brachycephalic and sensitive to heat. Summer walks must be kept short and timed to cooler windows. A cooling mat is a useful summer addition, and a water bottle on every walk. Never use a collar for walking β€” always a harness.

Grooming

The coat requires daily brushing if kept long, or regular professional grooming for a shorter puppy cut. The face β€” particularly the area around the eyes β€” needs daily attention to prevent staining and infection. This is a high-maintenance coat that most Shih Tzu owners eventually manage with professional help.

Personality

Friendly, playful, and adaptable. Good with children, other dogs, and cats when socialized appropriately. Surprisingly confident for a small breed β€” they don't typically have the anxiety that some small breeds show. They're content in apartments, houses, or anywhere their person is. They simply want to be with you and reasonably comfortable while doing it.
