Springer Spaniel Owner Guide: The Enthusiastic All-Rounder

The English Springer Spaniel is one of those breeds who approaches every aspect of life at full commitment. The walk is the best walk. The greeting is the best greeting. The treat is the best treat. The play session is the best play session. Their enthusiasm is genuine, sustained, and genuinely contagious — living with a Springer is difficult to do without catching some of their joy.

Exercise Requirements

Significant — Springers were bred to work all day in the field and have the stamina to match. 60-90 minutes of vigorous daily exercise. They love water, love fetch, and love running through undergrowth — all activities that tap into their flushing and retrieving heritage. A silicone frisbee is excellent for Springers who love chase and retrieve games.

Mental Stimulation

As important as physical exercise. Springers are intelligent working dogs who need their brain engaged. Nose work through a snuffle mat taps directly into their scenting heritage. Training sessions, puzzle feeders, and games all contribute to a mentally satisfied Springer.

Grooming

The feathered coat requires regular brushing — ears, legs, belly, and tail collect debris and mat quickly. Professional grooming every 8-10 weeks plus 3-4 brushings weekly at home. Ears need weekly checking and cleaning — floppy ears over water-loving dogs are a recipe for ear infections.

Temperament

Friendly, sociable, and generally excellent with children and other animals. They're people-oriented dogs who want to be involved in family life. Good with strangers after an initial assessment, which makes them poor guard dogs and excellent companions.
