Standard Poodle Owner Guide: The Athlete in the Fancy Haircut

The Standard Poodle has an image problem caused entirely by show-ring grooming. The continental clip — those dramatic pompoms — was designed to protect joints and vital organs while the dog retrieved from cold water, while leaving freedom of movement. The underlying dog is a powerful, athletic, water-retrieving working breed of extraordinary intelligence. The pom-poms are optional. The substance beneath them is remarkable.

Intelligence and Mental Requirements

Standard Poodles are consistently ranked among the top two or three most intelligent dog breeds. They learn fast, remember long, and get bored quickly. A mentally under-stimulated Standard Poodle is a creative and destructive problem-solver. Daily mental enrichment — snuffle mats, treat balls, training sessions, agility — is not optional.

Exercise

60-90 minutes of vigorous daily exercise. They're athletic dogs who love swimming, running, and fetch. A frisbee combines their retrieve drive with athletic movement perfectly.

Coat and Grooming

Standard Poodles don't shed significantly but require professional grooming every 6-8 weeks. The continuously growing coat mats without regular maintenance. Between appointments, a grooming glove for face and paw maintenance reduces matting between professional visits.

Bloat Risk

Standard Poodles are deep-chested and at significant bloat risk. Feed from a slow feeder or treat ball. No exercise for one hour before and after meals. Know the signs — unproductive retching, distended belly, restlessness — and treat as the emergency it is.

Health and Longevity

One of the healthiest large breeds with a lifespan of 12-15 years. Hip dysplasia, progressive retinal atrophy, and Addison's disease are the primary breed-specific concerns.
